Opportunities Abroad
The Responsibilities and Opportunities at UC Davis
Setting up the program may seem more involved than actually being
abroad. It requires that you complete a proposal, and meet and gain
committee approval. Quarter Abroad has program staff to help facilitate
this process, and to conduct research relating to the program (housing,
courses, etc.). But the majority of the work will fall on your shoulders.
Once the program has been approved you will be given funds to travel
abroad and make arrangements to finalize the agreement, housing,
orientation activities, and tie up any other loose ends. You may
be asked to help with outreach and recruitment of students, and
to provide talks with other faculty/students regarding the program.
The Quarter Abroad staff will rely on your expertise to assist with
providing information for the program's student handbook.
The Job Abroad
The UC Davis Quarter Abroad faculty program leader functions as
instructor, advisor, liaison and primary support to students abroad.
- You will be responsible for teaching one upper division course
while abroad. Expect to act as the liaison for the other courses
taught by host institution faculty, which includes translating
grades, solving problems, and managing our students in their
classes.
- Program Directors should have academic connections in the
host country and are responsible for coordinating agreements
with the host institution, and providing direction on courses
taught by the host institution. You are our eyes, ears and voice
with the host institution. Your help providing information will
be instrumental in preparing our student handbook and answering
program questions.
- You will act as advisor, confidant, primary support, and occasionally
disciplinarian to approximately 30 UC Davis students. While
no one expects you to be available 24 hours a day, but your
role as Program Director requires that you are involved, committed
and available to students.
- Orientation activities take up quite a bit of your time, both
before departure and in country. This would include answering
student questions about the program, providing guidance about
courses, and arranging and leading the in country orientation.
What You Get
- Your UCD salary plus a program budget.
- Credit hours to your department.
- Another notch on your list of academic accomplishments.
Program Proposals
Quarter Abroad is looking to expand the number of programs offered
each year. We are accepting program proposals that are in line
with our mission and requirements. The basic requirements are
fluency in the host institution language and a demonstrated academic
interest in the host country.

General Program Requirements
Typically, programs are 10 - 12 weeks in length, and students
may earn 15 to 22 units.
The program must be unique, and offer something different
from programs that are already offered in the Education
Abroad Program (EAP) or UC Davis Summer Abroad (SA).
Host institutions must be degree granting, accredited institutions
of the same caliber as the University of California.
Typically programs include three to five courses. One is taught
by the Program Director in their discipline. Other courses should
focus on language and culture of the host country. "Language
and culture" can be defined as history, art, political science,
international relations, sociology, anthropology, literature,
and basic to advanced language courses.
Excursions are part the program and should include: a city tour,
one to two day trips, etc.
Housing should be arranged prior to departure and may be home-stays,
dormitories, and room or apartment rentals.
Your Proposal Should Include
- A description of the course you will teach.
- A description of the other courses available at the
host institution for our students.
- A description of the city (population, primary language
spoken, characteristics, services available, transportation,
cost of living).
- Facilities of the host institution and services available
to students. Include the history of the institution and
stature.
- Housing options.
- Orientation ideas and excursions.
When you contact Quarter Abroad regarding your interest,
you will be sent the proposal forms.
