Leading a Quarter Abroad Program
The Quarter Abroad Program is seeking faculty proposals for leading programs abroad.
UC Davis Quarter Abroad currently consists of eight quarter-length programs in Argentina, Cuba, England, Italy, Japan, Mexico, South Africa and Spain. Programs are led by UC Davis Faculty members and are typically offered through a foreign institution or a study abroad provider. The programs in England and Mexico are internship-based. Quarter Abroad programs are open to all UC Davis students in good academic standing (2.0 GPA) and are usually capped at 30 students. Students earn between 16 and 20 units of academic credit over a 10 to 12-week period. To get a sense of the goals and formats of Quarter Abroad, please visit the Quarter Abroad web site (http://quarterabroad.ucdavis.edu). In contrast with the semester- or year-long offerings of the Education Abroad Program (EAP), or with the 4-week courses offered by Summer Abroad, Quarter Abroad provides a unique opportunity for UC Davis students to study abroad during the Fall, Winter or Spring academic quarters.
General Requirements
- Programs should be designed for University of California, Davis students who wish to study abroad for a quarter.
- Programs are typically led by one faculty member but in some cases, arrangements may be made for two faculty members to lead the program, together or in sequence. The faculty leader(s) is expected to teach one or more of the courses offered, depending on the arrangement with the home department/program.
- QA programs are typically offered with a host university or study abroad provider who is responsible for part of the instruction and some or all of the logistics. All academic matters are the responsibility of the faculty leader(s), however.
- Programs should be 10 to 12 weeks in length and provide 16-20 units of credit. Courses offered in the proposed program must be regular offerings listed in the UC Davis General Catalog. For academic integration purposes, it is strongly recommended that the proposed program be designed to meet the requirements of one or more majors on campus and be endorsed by the department/program that houses the major(s). Programs may have more than one academic track (and combination of courses) to meet the needs of different student cohorts.
- Cost effectiveness of the program will be given careful consideration and a budget section is included in the proposal form.
- Faculty leaders should have academic connections in the host country and are responsible for developing the program and coordinating agreements with the host institution or study abroad provider, and providing direction on courses taught by those. They act as academic advisor, confidant, and primary support, and their role requires that they be involved, committed and available to students.
- The Staff at Quarter Abroad (quarterabroad@ucdavis.edu) provides assistance with program development, and with program administration, accounting and logistics once the program is offered, but the primary responsibility of exploring options and developing the program in the host country falls on the faculty leader(s).
- Orientation activities are significant, both before departure and in country. They include answering student questions about the program, providing guidance about courses, and arranging and leading the in-country orientation.
- Programs should be unique, and offer something different from Education Abroad Program (http://eap.ucop.edu) or UC Davis Summer Abroad (http://summer-abroad.ucdavis.edu) offerings.
Faculty Compensation
While leading a Quarter Abroad Program, the faculty leader(s) receives his/her UC Davis salary and benefits. When appropriate, the faculty leader(s) should negotiate course release terms directly with the Department Chair/Program Director. The program budget provides roundtrip airfare in economy class, a per diem for housing and meals, and some telephone, transportation and supply expenses.
Eligibility
Applicants must have a faculty appointment at UC Davis for the academic year they will be abroad. Their participation in the QA program must be approved by their Department Chair/Program Director.
Procedure for Submitting Proposals
Faculty members should submit a program description outlining the rationale for offering the program abroad, a list of proposed courses and corresponding units, a description of the target student audience, a list of the proposed location(s) and facilities, including classrooms, meal and housing options, a description of the arrangements with the host institution or third-party provider, and a tentative budget. Sample syllabi should be included along with a list of possible field trips. The proposal form is attached to this email and it can also be found on our web site (http://quarterabroad.ucdavis.edu).
