The University of California requires that all students have health insurance. Consequently all students participating on a Quarter Abroad Program must be enrolled in SHIP insurance or submit a SHIP waiver and enroll in comparable private health insurance.
Students covered by SHIP will have to pay for treatment out of pocket while overseas. Upon their return they will submit a copy of an itemized bill and their receipts translated into English to Cowell Student Health Center (CSHC) Insurance Services. CSHC will assist the student in submitting their claim to Blue Cross. SHIP insurance will cover 50% of any medical cost incurred while abroad. Claim forms can be found on the SHIP insurance website. Click here for a summary of SHIP coverage.
If you choose to waive SHIP insurance you must be covered by a plan that provides comparable insurance. Please see the SHIP Waiver website for additional information. It is the student’s responsibility to contact their provider to determine the terms of international coverage, reimbursement and claims policies as this can vary considerably and not all providers cover treatment received while abroad.
