REQUIREMENTS / COURSES


Eligibility

The program is limited to University of California, Davis students in good academic standing (GPA of 2.00 and not on Academic Probation).

There are no prerequisites for this program, but completion of SPA 1 is highly recommended.

Course Descriptions

EDU 120: (4 units) Social/Philosophical Foundations of Education - GE Credit: SocSci, Wrt.
Students will learn about the philosophical, historical and sociological study of education and the school in our society. Taught by Professor Tom Timar.

EDU 198 : (4 units) Special Topics in Education -- Cuban Culture
Through a series of guest lectures by faculty from the Casa de las Americas, students will receive an overview of the highlights of Cuban culture, art, history, politics and social structures. Co-taught by faculty from the Casa de las Americas and Professor Tom Timar.

EDU 199: (4 units) Comparative Education Policy
More details coming soon. Co-taught by Professor Tom Timar and faculty from the Casa de las Americas.

EDU 192: (4 units) Education Internship
Students will participate in internships working in Cuban grade school classrooms. Students will spend approximately 4 hours per week as a classroom intern and will have the chance to interact with Cuban school teachers and students. Supervision of the internship will be provided by Dr. TomTimar, Program Faculty Leader.

SPA 98/198 (2 units) Spanish Language & Daily Culture
Students will work in small groups with faculty from the Casa de las Americas to improve their Spanish, to learn Cuban Spanish, and to discuss and understand daily cultural issues.

All education courses count toward the Minor in Education.
