Japanese Language and Culture Program


REQUIREMENTS / COURSES


Eligibility

The program is limited to University of California, Davis students in good academic standing (GPA of 2.00 and not on Academic Probation). Japanese prerequisites are listed below:

  • Level One
    No prior Japanese language experience.
  • Level Two
    Must have completed JPN 2 or the equivalent.
  • Level Three
    Must have completed JPN 5 or the equivalent.

Equivalents may include: AP credits, a placement exam or an interview with the EALC's Japanese Language Coordinator. Students who are uncertain about their placement in this program should consult with either the Japanese Language Coordinator or the Faculty Program Leader.

Level Descriptions

Level 1: JPN 1AS (equivalent to JPN 1, JPN 2, JPN 3) and JPN 98/198* (17 Units)
Introduction to Japanese grammar and development of all language skills in a cultural context with special emphasis on communication.

Level 2: JPN 7S (equivalent to JPN 3, JPN 4, JPN 5, JPN 6) and JPN 98/198* (22 Units)
Training in spoken and written Japanese in cultural context, based on language skills developed in previous courses.

Level 3: JPN 117S (equivalent to JPN 6, JPN 111, JPN 112, JPN 113) and JPN 98/198* (19 Units)
Readings in modern Japanese short stories, newspaper articles, and essays; conversation practice based on these readings.
