STUDENT SERVICES

Host Institution

Our host, Kyoto Seika University, is a relatively small private university, located in the hills just outside the city. A short ride on the commuter train that stops near the campus will bring you into the city; a walk in the opposite direction will take you into the foothills of Mt. Hiei, the holy mountain that has guarded the city since its founding in 794. Seika is particularly strong in the arts and humanities. In the arts, it is famous for its unique School of Cartoon and Comic Art. Its humanities program includes a strong focus on social and environmental problems. You can learn more about the school from its English website (http://www.kyoto-seika.ac.jp/eng/). Although our program will focus on language study, its 2-unit culture course will briefly introduce Kyoto's history and include field trips to some of its cultural monuments that the casual tourist would miss. On weekends, you will have time to visit on your own the familiar sites such as the even more ancient capital of Nara, famous for its Great Buddha, the medieval castle at Himeji, and Kyoto's own splendid temples.
