Course Descriptions

ENL 163S - Topics in British Literature and Culture: London in Theatre, Film & Literature (4 Units) - GE Credit: ArtHum, Wrt. (Letter Grade)
For many centuries the city of London has been the center of a nation, and from about 1600 to 1950 it was the center of an empire. Since the time of Chaucer and Shakespeare it has also been the center of British publishing, of the theater, and of the British film industry. So it is not surprising that London has itself been a topic for the arts. Poets, dramatists and novelists have discussed the pros and cons of city life and represented the city as a major presence in their plots and stories. We will study a range of representations of the city in theater, literature and film, from the age of Shakespeare to the modern period. Throughout the quarter we will take in a good deal of live theater, and visit as many sites as we can that relate to our objects of study. Students should exit this course with a new awareness of the city of London as a major ‘character’ in the cultural and artistic life of Britain over several centuries.

ENL 198S British Life, Work, and Culture (4 Units) (P/NP only)
This course will be co-taught by faculty from CAPA as well as the Faculty Program Leader. It aims at facilitating student orientation by helping students to connect their experience in London within the broader context of British society. The course will enable individuals to develop an understanding of British society as an integrated whole which is more than the sum of its parts. This in turn should encourage critical discussion and reflection about the differences between US, British, and European cultures, and the collective relationship that individuals have with their own societies.

ENL 92/192 Internship in ___ (6 units)
CAPA International Education will provide internship placement in London for our program. Typically, internships are in Communications and Publishing, Accounting and Finance, Business and Economics, Education, Law, Behavioral Sciences, Health, and many other social science and humanities areas. However, the program also offers internship opportunities in the following fields: Community and Voluntary Services, Politics and Public Policy, Theater, Music and the Arts, Hotel and Restaurant Management, and Tourism. Internship courses (92 or 192) are available for credit on a Pass/No Pass grading basis only. The internships are worth 6 units, and students will generally work a minimum of 20 hours per week, 2 1/2 days a week.

* NOTE: All credited internships will be sponsored by a UC Davis faculty member from the English Department. This sponsor will evaluate the academic content of the internship experience. The department will assign the student a CRN number for enrollment and the student will enroll in the course prior to departure. Students will receive transcript notation for their internships. Internships are not paid internships.

VISA REQUIREMENTS
Students will need to apply on their own for a pre-entry visa to be able to complete an internship in the UK. Students will need to obtain the visa before their arrival in the UK. The Visa costs £99 which translates to around $225 (listed on the budget). To apply, students will submit an application online, send their application materials to a British Consulate, and may need to visit a British Consulate in order to provide biometric data (digital photo and fingerprints). A step-by-step guide to this process will be provided and explained to all participants during orientation.
