and a rich cultural and artistic heritage. So why not study
in Spain's capital city and great cosmopolatin metropolis?
When you study abroad in Madrid, you’ll walk through
history itself, down stoned-paved streets and past countless
flowering balconies of the 18th century buildings before
arriving in Madrid’s city center, famous for tapas,
shopping and entertainment. The unique spirit of Madrid
is both serene and lively, making it a captivating place
to study abroad and learn Spanish in Spain.
Students will take intensive and accelerated courses in
Spanish language and culture, with planned activities and
excursions to highlight Spain's incredible history and beautiful
scenery.

ELIGIBILITY
The program is limited to University of California, Davis students in good academic standing (GPA of 2.00 and not on Academic Probation).
Students with no prior language experience will take beginning
level Spanish courses, and students who have already completed
SPA 24 or the equivalent (AP credits and/or placement exam)
will take upper division Spanish courses:
- Level One
No prior Spanish language experience.
- Level Two
Must have completed SPA 24 or the equivalent.
* Note: This program does not
offer the second year of Spanish (SPA 21, 22,
23 & 24). Students who have already completed SPA
141, 148, and 159 are not eligible for this program. Students
who have completed SPA 100 should consult with the Faculty
Program Leader prior to application.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW
Orientations
There will be a two or three mandatory Pre-Departure
Orientation Sessions in Davis and an in-country orientation
in Madrid. Students will have the opportunity to learn about
and acclimate to Madrid and participate in planned activities.

Academic Programs
Students will take intensive and accelerated Spanish
language classes at Saint
Louis University in Madrid. In addition to the language
courses, Level 1 students will take a Group Study course
in Spanish culture (SPA 98).
Course Descriptions
Level 1:
SPA 1S, 2S, 3S, and 98. (16 units)
Introduction to Spanish grammar and development of all language skills in a cultural context with special emphasis on communication.
Level 2:
SPA 100S, 141S, 148S, and 159S. (16 units)
Study of Spanish literature and culture, along with the major developments in the arts and social institutions of Spain. Readings, lectures, and discussions will be in Spanish.
Co-curricular Activities *
Field trips go to Toledo, Salamanca and Burgos.
This includes visits to the Museo del Prado, Museo Reina
Sofía and Museo Thyssen Tour around Madrid.
Housing & Meals
Students will live in homestays with local families
in Madrid. Breakfast and dinner are included in the price.
