Bienvenidos! Spain...the very name conjures magical images of sun-drenched beaches, Moorish castles and a rich cultural and artistic heritage. So why not study in Spain's capital city and great cosmopolitan metropolis?
When you study abroad in Madrid, you’ll walk through history itself, down stoned-paved streets and past countless flowering balconies of the 18th century buildings before arriving in Madrid’s city center, famous for tapas, shopping and entertainment. The unique spirit of Madrid is both serene and lively, making it a captivating place to study abroad and learn Spanish in Spain.
Students will take intensive and accelerated courses in Spanish language and culture, with planned activities and excursions to highlight Spain's incredible history and beautiful scenery.
Orientations
There will be a two or three mandatory Pre-Departure Orientation Sessions in Davis and an in-country orientation in Madrid. Students will have the opportunity to learn about and acclimate to Madrid and participate in planned activities.
Academic Programs
Students will take intensive and accelerated Spanish language classes through the ACCENT Madrid Center. In addition to the language courses, all students will complete a special project in Spanish culture (SPA 99/199).

ACCOMMODATIONS / MEALS
Students will select one of the following housing options:
Student Apartments
Students may choose to stay in double or single rooms in co-ed apartments that are located throughout Madrid. Apartments have a combination of single and double bedrooms and house both ACCENT and other international students. Each bedroom is furnished with beds, a closet or armoire, sheets, pillows and blankets. Kitchen facilities include a stove, refrigerator, cooking utensils and dishes. Students staying in these apartments prepare their own meals. Kitchen and bathroom facilities are shared by everyone in the apartment. All of the student apartments are located in and around the center of Madrid, within a 20 to 55 minute walk, bus or metro ride from the ACCENT Madrid Center. **Please note: Single room accommodation in apartments are subject to availability.
Homestay
Students who choose a homestay in Madrid live with carefully selected host families and receive breakfast and dinner daily. Homestay accommodations provide students with an opportunity to observe first-hand how the Spanish live. Students are placed in double or single rooms in homes within the Madrid city limits, with varying commutes to classes of 15 to 55 minutes by walking and metro. It is recommended that students considering homestays have previous knowledge of the Spanish language.
STUDENT SERVICES
Host Institution
ACCENT is an international education organization that works with over 50 American colleges and universities to provide high quality study abroad programs. ACCENT students come from all over the U.S. and represent a wide range of ages, education levels and academic interests.
The ACCENT Madrid Center is located at the Instituto Internacional in the heart of the traditional Castilian neighborhood of Chamberi, near the Castellana and Madrid's financial district. The Instituto Internacional en España was founded in 1892 by a Bostonian, Alice Gordon Gulick. Recently declared a national monument of historic interest, the Instituto Internacional has an excellent lending library, cafeteria, auditorium, adjacent gardens and rooftop terrace.
The neighborhood surrounding the ACCENT Madrid Center, Chamberi, is a Castilian, middle-class neighborhood lined with a perfect mixture of broad and narrow streets, all shaded by plenty of trees. A walk around this quiet area in Madrid leads students to such places as the Museo Sorolla, and the sunny Plaza de Chamberi with its 19th century style market. Also, just a short block from the ACCENT Madrid Center, students and faculty can find the open air museum, Museo de la Escultura Abstracta, featuring sculptures by Miro, Chillida and Colombian artist Botero.
