Cuban and Caribbean Culture Program

Bienvenidos! The Cuban and Caribbean Culture program in Cuba will begin with an orientation and city tour of Havana. Students will take Upper Division UCD courses in Caribbean Literature and the University Writing Program taught by UC Davis professors.

ORIENTATIONS
Students will take part in one or two mandatory pre-departure orientation sessions in Davis, followed by an in-country orientation upon arrival in Havana, Cuba.

ACADEMICS
Students will take Upper Division UCD courses in Caribbean Literature and University Writing Program taught by UC Davis professors.

Students will take:
Comparative Literature 180S (4 units)
Comparative Literature 198 (2-4 units)
University Writing Program 102A (4 units)
University Writing Program 104C (4 units)
TOTAL = 14-16 units

The program will be hosted by Casa de las Americas which is the oldest and most prestigious cultural institution in Latin America and the Caribbean.

REQUIREMENTS / COURSES

ELIGIBILITY
The program is limited to University of California, Davis students in good academic standing (GPA of 2.00 and not on Academic Probation).

All students must have complete ENL 1, 3 or UWP 1.

Note: If you are accepted for the Cuba Program, you must submit a scanned image of your VALID passport (NOT a passport application) or your application will be considered incomplete- No exceptions.

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

COM 180S: (4 units) Culture, Literature, History and Politics of the Americas
A comparative approach to the multi-lingual and multi-cultural literatures of the Caribbean. Works from English, French and Spanish speaking regions with special attention given to problems of identity, diaspora and resistance, class, gender and race. GE Credit: ArtHum, Div, Wrt. Taught by professor Marc Blanchard.

COM 198: (2-4 units) Directed Group Study for Advanced Undergraduates
Students will work with Professor Marc Blanchard and will complete an independent study project. (P/NP Only)

UWP 102A: (4 units) Ethnic Voice in the Americas
A study of essays investigating the importance of ethnic narrative. Course taught in English with original texts in English or translated English, highlighting transnational influences of English. GE Credit: Wrt.

UWP 104C (4 units) Journalism: A Study of Transamerican News Items
A study and writing of news and feature articles that focus on transamerican news items. Course taught in English. GE Credit: Wrt. Please note: This course may meet your upper division writing requirement. Please discuss this issue with your academic advisor since the requirement varies by college.

ACCOMMODATIONS / MEALS

The Casa de las Americas is the oldest and most prestigious cultural institution in Latin America and the Caribbean. Founded by Haydee SantaMaria, Fidel Castro and Che Guevara in 1959, it is known throughout the world as the alternative to first world cultural institutions: Library of Congress, British Museum, the Louvre. In addition to its many cultural programs, the Casa maintains a residency where exchange scholars and students are housed. The residency consists of the two top floors in one of the highest buildings on the Havana waterfront, the famous Malecon, with unobstructed view of the Caribbean Sea. Residency housing and kitchen is supervised by Maria and her staff, dear to generations of students. Courses will be given at the Casa proper, a few blocks down the Malecon.
