Mexican Culture and Health Internship

Bienvenidos! This specialized program will offer students the opportunity to take UCD classes on transnational (US-Mexico) health issues and participate in internships in hospitals and clinics in Oaxaca, Mexico! The courses offered through this program are designed to provide students with cultural competencies that are crucial for effective health care professionals. This program is also designed to provide in-depth clinical experience that will not only lead to greater Spanish fluency, but help participants clarify career goals in myriad of health professions.

ORIENTATIONS
There will be at least two mandatory pre-departure orientation sessions in Davis, followed by an online orientation before departure and an in-country orientation in Oaxaca. The support staff in Oaxaca will provide students with all logistical information such as rotation/class schedules and homestay information upon arrival.

ACADEMICS
The program will be structured to cater for a class of approximately 20 students with a fixed curriculum for the quarter, for a total of 20 units of credit. This structure will allow for lectures, discussions, an excursion and internship.

REQUIREMENTS / COURSES

ELIGIBILITY
The program is limited to University of California, Davis students in good academic standing (GPA of 2.00 and not on academic probation).

Interested applicants must demonstrate sufficient Spanish language skills to understand and converse with Spanish speaking medical professionals (during guest lectures and clinical rotations), patients, and host families (housing will be homestays).

In addition, students must be junior standing or possess the demonstrated maturity and coursework to understand fundamental medical and biological terms/functions and their impact on people.

The following required courses must be completed prior to departure in order to meet minimum eligibility standards: Bio-Sci Courses: 1A, 1B, AND a Spanish requirement of SPA 21 or 31. Your Spanish must be proficient to the degree that you will feel comfortable learning and working in a Spanish speaking environment.

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
All students must take:

  • CHI 21S Chicana/o and Latina/o Health Care Issues (taught in Spanish-4 units)
  • CHI 145S Bi-National Health (taught in Spanish-5 units)
  • CHI 199S Students will receive a letter grade for this directed group study which will require a research project and/or term paper (5 units)
  • CHI 192S Clinical Rotation Internship, non-graded (6 units)

CHI145S Bi-National Health (5 units)
This course is designed for bilingual (Spanish-English) students considering careers in medicine or allied health professions and interested in improving their cultural competency skills within the Mexican origin population. The course will be team taught in Mexico with health professionals and experts in the medical field. Content areas of the course include the following: overview of bi-national adult and child morbidity and mortality rates, standard practice patterns for disease treatment in Mexico and the US, risk factors associated to selected diseases, and distinct cultural and indigenous practice patterns. A major goal of this course is to provide specific knowledge on the Mexican and indigenous population for future health professionals so that they may systematically understand the unique cultural, linguistic and health needs of this population. In addition, the course should assist students in developing skills that allow them to appropriately interpret standard medical risk factors related to the onset of diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, dengue, tuberculosis, HIV, and specific cancers within this population.

ACCOMMODATIONS / MEALS

Students will reside with families in Oaxaca, organized through Child Family Health International (CFHI-UCD Oaxaca Program) for the period of September 20 - December 6, 2008. Accommodation includes 2 meals per day (breakfast and a late lunch) in addition to a single room. The student provides their own toiletries. The homestays will be centrally located to facilitate public transportation to classes and internship rotations. While in Puerto Escondido students stay at a hostel/hotel type of housing, sharing rooms (2 to 3 per room). Air conditioning is not included in the price. Two meals a day are provided.


EXCURSIONS / ACTIVITIES

Students will get the opportunity to travel to Puerto Escondido, a beach resort southwest of Oaxaca, for two weeks. While on excursion, students will attend various lectures, participate in clinical visits, learn about region-specific health concerns, and have evenings free for personal leisure. We anticipate several other excursions while the group is in Oaxaca.
