Mathematics and Culture in Berlin (NEW)

Berlin, Germany

  • Dates – TBD
  • Max Enrollment – 30
  • Taught In – English
  • Prerequisites – Yes
  • Academic Area – Mathematics

Program Overview

The German capital naturally lends itself to the study of mathematics and culture. Several German mathematicians—including Leibniz, Euler, Weierstrass and Kronecker—made important contributions to the development of calculus. Living and learning in Berlin makes finishing off a calculus requirement enjoyable! The program will feature visits to Berlin museums providing an exploration of mathematics and mathematicians through the arts. The Neues Museum, Technikmuseum, Pergamon museum, Gemäldegalerie, and a visit to a contemporary art gallery in Kreuzberg round out the extended program. The core element of this program is MAT 21B, the second quarter of the calculus sequence. This course is required for most majors in STEM subjects. The offering should appeal to students who forgo the standard sequence consisting of MAT 21A in Fall, MAT 21B in Winter, MAT 21C in Spring.
