Alfred (“Fred”) Boll serves as the Global Learning Hub's Executive Director, overseeing a dynamic team focused on preparing students to thrive and compete successfully in a globalized world by developing skills, knowledge, and networks. Boll held various leadership roles as a Foreign Service Officer at the U.S. Department of State, including oversight of programs that promote and facilitate global education. He has served as a lecturer in the University of Wisconsin-Madison's experiential study away program in Washington, DC, and trained as a lawyer and legal scholar with a focus on international humanitarian law, nationality in international law, and international human rights. He has a working knowledge of 12 languages, and served for ten years as a Delegate and Legal Adviser for the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). He holds a doctorate in international law from the University of Sydney in Australia, JD and MA degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and a BA (Honors) in Political Science from the University of Chicago. He is passionate about creating educational opportunities for all students and fostering a just global community.
