Global Research Opportunities

​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​Check out our new resource for low or no-cost research opportunities offered by institutions abroad. These can be an affordable way to engage in international research for both undergraduate and graduate students. Many of these programs charge no program fee to participate, and others offer scholarships to offset some of these expenses.

Universitas 21 (U21) Sustainable Micro-Internships

​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​The U21 Sustainable Micro-Internships Program is a free, virtual, two-week project-based internship for undergrad and grad students. Work with students from across the globe, sharing knowledge and expertise while providing solutions to a challenge related to one of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Apply. UC Davis Global Learning Conference – Showcase Opportunity

​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​The Global Learning Hub will host the Global Learning Conference on Saturday, April 5, 2025. DAAD Research Internships in Science and Engineering (RISE) Scholars

​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​The RISE program offers undergraduates in the fields of biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering, earth sciences and physics the opportunity to complete a funded summer research internship at top German universities and research institutions. Technical University of Munich (TUM) Practical Research Experience Program (PREP) Summer Research Internship

​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​Together with TUM scientists, TUM PREP students work in small research teams on a research project. The program includes accommodations support, a €1,000 scholarship, an orientation and framework program, TUM buddies program and orientation. Deadline: November 24.

Douglass-O'Connell Global Internship

​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​On this eight-week summer internship program in Dublin, Ireland, participants will expand their understanding of Irish history and culture while gaining work experience. Intern with a host company and complete a six-credit internship seminar. Participants will receive a fellowship award that covers the full program cost, airfare and a living stipend. Apply. Humboldt Internship Program in Berlin

​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​This program offers research opportunities to undergraduate and graduate students. Students apply for a specific project in biology, chemistry, social sciences, cultural studies, physics, entrepreneurship and more. Requirements include a resume, cover letter and a letter of recommendation. Scholarships are available to cover the small program fee. Apply. Deadline: December 20.

Competitions, Challenges, and Funding

Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program

​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​CLS is a fully funded 8-10-week summer overseas language and cultural immersion program for American undergraduate and graduate students. Eligible languages: Arabic, Azerbaijani, Chinese, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Portuguese, Russian, Swahili, Turkish and Urdu. Apply. Deadline: November 19.

Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Spark—Virtual Opportunity

​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​CLS Spark is a virtual program for U.S. undergraduate citizens to learn Arabic, Chinese or Russian through online classes and activities facilitated by native speakers at a host institution abroad. Scholars will also receive an official language proficiency designation via ACTFL OPI testing. Apply. Deadline: November 19.

Blakemore Freeman Fellowships

​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​This fellowship provides a stipend, tuition and travel expenses for intensive language study of Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Vietnamese, Indonesian, Khmer or Burmese in approved language programs in East or Southeast Asia. By the start of the grant, applicants should have received a bachelor’s degree and have the equivalent of three years of language study. Deadline: December 30.

UC Davis Widening Circles and Global Grad Grants (Info Session)

Learn about the Widening Circles program, a fully-funded program that provides UC Davis students the opportunity to engage in an online curriculum focused on ethical global engagement and social change. David L. Boren Scholarship (Info Session)

Boren Scholarship, which provides students up to $25,000 to study abroad in countries outside Australia, Canada, New Zealand and Western Europe and incorporates intensive language study of less commonly taught languages.
