Global Aggies Blog: A Journey of Language Learning
Kiara Zecha, a fourth-year Japanese major and education minor, has always had the goal of being bilingual. Through her hard work and commitment to her journey, Kiara has amassed multiple experiences and outlets to improve her Japanese language comprehension. She hopes to use these skills in her future career goal of teaching language abroad.

Global Leadership, Internships, and Research
UC Davis Global Impact Fellows Program
The Global Impact Fellows Program is a one-year commitment to leading or assisting a student-led initiative that addresses a global+local issue where students can hone project management, leadership and specific technical skills in an environment where they have real autonomy. UC Davis Graduate Student and Postdoc Certificate Series
This series is open to graduate students and postdocs. Participants can register for workshops with an emphasis on skill development in DEI or intercultural teaching and learning for success in intercultural work environments. Workshops can be combined toward a certificate from Global Affairs. Register.
California-Denmark Innovator Fellowship for Future Food and Health Leaders
This program gives biotechnology-focused Ph.D. and postdoctoral students training to turn university research into companies that accelerate positive societal impact. Spend six months in Denmark, conducting research at a top Danish university and gaining commercialization experience at the BioInnovation Institute or related incubator. All expenses covered. Azrieli International Visiting PhD Fellowship
This fellowship enables Ph.D. candidates to conduct short-term research at leading universities in Israel. It is valued at 12,000 ILS per month and is offered for up to four months. Please note that applicants interested in arriving for the spring 2026 semester may apply beginning September 1, 2025. Apply. Deadline: April 22.
International House Davis: English Practice Partners Volunteer Opportunity
Volunteer with the International House Davis English Practice Partner Program where you will be paired with international visitors within our community. Join for about an hour a week of English conversation practice. No English teaching experience necessary. Complete the volunteer form.
Competitions, Challenges, and Funding
Peter and Marion London Global Learning Innovation Award
This award supports an annual project led by one or more UC Davis students who will partner with Nepali and/or Tibetan students on a project with a strong public benefit related to sustainable development for disadvantaged communities. Award amount up to $4,500. Deadline: April 11.
UC Davis Eivind G. Lange '77 and Mary G. Puma Graduate Fellowship
This fellowship supports graduate students conducting research in Chile in partnership with the UC Davis Chile Life Sciences Innovation Center. The fellowship award is limited to a maximum of $4,000. Fellowship to be completed before December 31, 2025. Deadline: May 31.
Youth Leader Fund for a World Without Nuclear Weapons
Join global efforts to eliminate nuclear weapons through the Youth Leader Fund. Through online courses, participants receive training in principles of nuclear disarmament, non-proliferation and arms control. Select students will travel to Japan for a week-long tour. Travel and accommodation costs are covered. Apply. Deadline: April 13.
Falling Walls Labs
Falling Walls Labs are science/innovation slams where young researchers, students and entrepreneurs pitch innovative ideas or research that creates a positive impact on science and society to an interdisciplinary jury. Winners will be invited to the Falling Walls Conference in Berlin in November, with all expenses paid. Apply. Deadline: April 13.
APRU Global Health Virtual Case Competition
Teams of three to six students will receive a challenge relating to a pressing global health problem and have up to 12 weeks to propose a solution. The winning team will be announced at the 2025 APRU Global Health Conference and will receive a $1,000 prize. Teams must be registered by April 19.
Future Nobel Laureates Scholarship Program
This fully funded experience includes an online project-based course that begins in October 2025, an immersive field study and sessions at the Nobel Week Dialogue in Sweden in December 2025. Working in groups, students ideate and pitch innovative solutions for pressing global issues. Apply. Deadline: May 11.
UC Alianza MX Short-Term Research in Mexico for Graduate Students
Funding is available for short-term research at partner institutions in Mexico. The purpose of the short-term stays will be for graduate students at the University of California to accomplish specific laboratory, library or field research. UC Alianza MX will provide funding to cover living expenses, travel and other related expenses in Mexico for up to three months. Deadline: May 9.
Other Global Academic Opportunities
Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou) Summer Program
This immersive summer program offers interdisciplinary courses across AI, sustainability, innovation management and more—taught by HKUST(GZ)’s global faculty. Two UC Davis students can participate tuition-free, including housing and insurance. Airfare is not included. Spots are offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Email Chelsey Hawes by April 14 if interested.
2025 United States-Indonesia Society (USINDO) Summer Studies Program— Extended Deadline
June 3–August 8. A space just opened up in the USINDO Summer Studies Program, a 10-week immersive language and cultural experience in Indonesia this summer. The program includes international airfare, interactive lectures, field trips and a stay with a host family—for $2,000 or $500 for students who receive a needs-based scholarship. Apply. Final Deadline: April 17.

April 10, 3–4 p.m., virtual. Join us to learn about the Global Impact Fellows program, a one-year commitment to leading or assisting a student-led project that addresses a global+local issue. At this session, students will learn how the program fosters skills in project management, leadership and major-specific technical skills. Register.
Managing Conflict in Intercultural Spaces Workshop
April 15, 4–5:30 p.m., International Center 3119. In this session, participants will reflect on one’s own conflict style and how cultural norms and context contribute to conflict. Participants will also analyze and troubleshoot different conflict scenarios relevant to graduate and professional students and postdoctoral scholars. This is part of the Graduate Student and Postdoc Certificate Series. Register.
Communicating with Compassion: Transforming Microaggressions into Global Understanding
April 30, 4:15–5:45 p.m. At this session, participants will define micro-aggressions and understand how they perpetuate stereotypes and discrimination. Participants will also identify strategies for addressing and reducing the impact of micro-aggressions. This is part of the Graduate Student and Postdoc Certificate Series. Register.
Importance of Writing a Diversity Statement Workshop
May 1, 4–5:30 p.m., virtual. At this session, participants will identify important aspects of diversity statements and service in academia and the private sector and compose and edit their own diversity statement. This is part of the Graduate Student and Postdoc Certificate Series. Register.
