Virtual – Food and Nutrition Security
Each UC Davis Virtual Summer Internship program pairs UC Davis Study Abroad with a partner organization that manages the personalized internship placements, prepares you for the virtual experience, and provides advising support throughout the placement process and throughout your virtual internship. As part of the placement process for Virtual Summer Internships, participants will first enroll through UC Davis Study Abroad and then complete a supplemental application for the partner organization associated with their particular program.
Although Study Abroad partners with outside organizations for some aspects of Virtual Summer Internships, the official provider for these programs is UC Davis Study Abroad and course credit is issued by UC Davis
Internship Placement Process
After you enroll through UC Davis Study Abroad in the Virtual – Food & Nutrition Security program, you will receive instructions to complete materials for SIT Study Abroad.
SIT will work with you prior to the start of the program to identify your internship preferences. During the first week of the program, you will be introduced to possible internship placements and to receive additional advising from the SIT program leader regarding internship placements. You will be matched with your internship at the end of the first week of seminar and advising activities. As part of this process, you will be asked to complete an internship questionnaire and share a copy of your resume to assist SIT in identifying an appropriate internship.
While effort will be made to accommodate your preferences, specific internship placements are not guaranteed. You are encouraged to be open-minded and approach the program with a willingness to learn and grow, both professionally and personally.
Important Note for International Students
International students in the United States on an F-1 or J-1 visa will likely require employment authorization prior to engaging in any paid or unpaid virtual internship experience. Students should discuss this opportunity with an SISS advisor before applying if they are considering this program. If you are a non-Davis student, please consult with an international student advisor at your home campus.
Sample Internship Placements
As you’ll be working on issues related to food and nutrition security in Uganda, you will engage in approximately 24 hours of seminar and advising activities during the first week of the program prior to starting your internship placement. See the program syllabus for more details on these classes.
The core of the program will consist of students spending five weeks in a virtual internship with a local organization or institution in Uganda working on projects related to food and nutrition security in Uganda. You will be expected to spend a minimum of 24 hours per week in your internship, for a total of 144 hours (includes the 24 hours of seminar activities) spent working at your internship site.
Resume and Cover Letter Resources
We strongly recommend that you meet with an advisor at the UC Davis Career Center or the Career Center on your home campus to have your resume and cover letter reviewed prior to submitting these documents. The ICC provides many online resources, such as resume, cover letter, and letter of recommendation examples.
Our Program Partner
For this Virtual Summer Internship program, UC Davis Study Abroad partners with SIT Study Abroad, a private, non-profit, international organization deeply embedded in local communities around the world. SIT has been providing immersive, field-based study abroad programs for more than 50 years. SIT programs are developed around a framework of addressing the challenges of the most critical global issues of our time. Programs are designed to respect the strengths of local partners and to foster enduring relationships. This program is a customized program designed by SIT Study Abroad uniquely for UC Davis Study Abroad. A team of SIT staff will support you throughout the virtual internship experience.
Transcript Notation
Students participating in UC Davis Study Abroad Virtual Summer Internships are eligible to receive Transcript Notation (TN). Transcript notation documents your academically approved internship on your official UC Davis transcript. By having your experience noted, it provides proof of where and when you participated in an internship. This is especially valuable for international internships that may be difficult for a prospective employer or program to contact.
Transcript Notation is a process you’ll start within the first two weeks of your internship placement through Handshake, the tool UC Davis Career Center uses to connect students and employers.
