Summer Abroad Netherlands - On Site

Sustainable Urban Systems

Accommodations

Students share (2-3 students per room) accommodations in centrally located hostels in both Delft and Amsterdam. Housing will include a shared kitchen, wi-fi, common spaces and linens. Onsite laundry services are available in both locations.

UC Davis reserves the right to change the accommodation location. Should this be necessary, we will arrange alternative lodging. Please note that elevators, air conditioners, and other modern conveniences may not be available in all locations.

Meals

Breakfasts will be provided at your housing as well as three group dinners. Weekly lunches will be on your own. There are many food options nearby your accommodations and along the field trip routes including nearby grocery stores, restaurants, and cafes.

Excursions & Activities

During the first few days, class will meet for a few hours in the morning and again in late afternoon, split by a local field trip. During weekdays for the remainder of the trip, most days will be all-day field trips with class meetings taking place with guest speakers at their sites. Weekends and most weekday evenings are free, so students can explore Delft, Amsterdam, and neighboring cities in the Netherlands.

Program excursions and activities may include:

  • Day trip biking around Houten, a city built around the train-bicycle connection.
  • Visit to the world’s largest bike parking garage, in Utrecht.
  • Visit to the engineering marvel: Delta Works.
  • Visit to The Hague, home of the Peace Palace and the Dutch government, where we will go on a walking tour with town planners.
  • Visit to the beautiful Dutch coast near Scheveningen, including seeing the Sand Motor constructed to naturally manage coastal formation.
  • Tour with Sustainable Amsterdam to learn about smart development in the famously sustainable city.

Get to Know Your Destination

From Rick Steve’s:

"Rattling your bike over cobbles, past a line of gabled houses reflected in a mirror-smooth canal…the Netherlands is just like you imagined it. In its 17th-century Golden Age, Dutch traders established a global economy — and funded a culturally rich society back home. Tiny Holland may just have the world's densest concentration of great artists, and shows off their works in several world-class museums. Be sure to venture beyond Amsterdam — take advantage of the efficient train network, which puts nearly every Dutch destination within an easy day trip. Rent a bike and cruise the flat countryside. Wherever you roam, look behind its placid exterior, where you'll find a complex mix of modern technology, honored traditions, quaint countryside, outrageous architecture, and no-nonsense, globally minded people."

Study Abroad Advisory of Student Risk

Participation in this UC Davis Study Abroad program requires travel to and extended living in a foreign location(s) abroad. UC Davis Study Abroad endeavors to reduce and mitigate risk wherever possible.  However, the environments and risks associated with living in these locations are substantially different than those found during a regular course of study at UC Davis. All participants must download and review the following information prior to departure. Any questions should be directed to the Program Coordinator.
