Class Format

Your classroom experience is a combination of traditional classroom sessions and group project work complemented with guest lectures and field trips around Barcelona. Past participants describe this program as active. On a daily basis, you can expect to be moving about the city on any one mode of transportation: walking, bus, metro, or bicycle. The class generally meets Monday-Friday with weekends free. The program instructor will provide more details with the syllabus.

Courses

You will enroll in the course set below. Auditing is not an option. UC Davis programs are academic programs so participants should expect a substantial amount of course work.

  • Community and Regional Development (CRD) 153B. International Community Development: Europe (4 units)       
  • Examination and analysis of community development efforts in Europe and the impact of global forces in different settings. Alternative strategies with emphasis on self-reliance and locally controlled development. GE credit: SSWC
  • Community and Regional Development (CRD) 198: Directed Group Study (4 units, Pass/No Pass grading only)
  • Directed group study. This course includes participation on excursions and tours and attendance to guest lectures. Students are often asked to write reflective pieces. Assignment topics vary by program.

OR

  • Landscape Architecture (LDA) 191. Landscape Architecture Planning & Design Studio (5 units)
  • Faculty initiated workshops featuring advanced studies and applications of original work in landscape architecture. May be taught abroad. May be repeated up to 20 unit(s).

  • Landscape Architecture (LDA) 198. Directed Group Study (3 units, Pass/No Pass grading only)
  • Directed group study. This course includes participation on excursions and tours and attendance to guest lectures. Students are often asked to write reflective pieces. Assignment topics vary by program.
Graduate Course Options

Consent of the instructor and graduate standing is required in order to register for the graduate level courses.

  • Community and Regional Development (CRD) 242S: Community  Development Organizations (International) (4 units)  
  • Fieldwork—10 hour(s); Lecture—5 hour(s); Workshop—5 hour(s). Theory and praxis of organizations with social change agendas at the community level. Emphasis on local governance, non-profit organizations and philanthropic foundations at an international level. 
  • Community and Regional Development (CRD) 298. Directed Group Study (4 units, Pass/No Pass grading only)
  • Directed group study. This course includes participation on excursions and tours and attendance to guest lectures. Students are often asked to write reflective pieces. Assignment topics vary by program.

Prerequisites

Along with the general eligibility requirements, Study Abroad will be enforcing the completion of the following prerequisites. For non-UC Davis students, the equivalent at your campus:

Completion of LDA 1 (or equivalent introductory course in environmental design, architecture, or landscape architecture that has a drawing component)

  • Non-UC Davis students: Prerequisites can only be waived by the instructor—please contact the instructor if you wish to discuss this option. Please note that you will be required to submit proof of prerequisites waived when submitting your enrollment. If you plan to take these courses to satisfy a requirement at your home campus, please meet with your academic advisor to make sure waiving the prerequisites does not impact that requirement.
  • Failure to complete unwaived prerequisites prior to program departure can result in administrative withdrawal and fees owed accordingly.
